The hook rate benchmark you are using is eleven TikTok accounts from 2022

We followed the circulating hook rate and hold rate benchmarks back toward a source. One survives the walk: 30.66%, from eleven TikTok accounts one agency managed in 2022. Here is the whole trail, and how to build a baseline out of your own account instead.

The short answer

The most-repeated hook rate benchmark on the internet is 30.7%. We followed it back. It is 30.66%, published on 6 July 2022 by the growth agency Tuff, across eleven TikTok accounts that agency managed over six months. The original page is dead. Downstream the sample fell off, the date became 2026, and one shop's client list became the TikTok average. No platform publishes a hook rate benchmark at all.

The first two came out of a day spent fetching pages and reading what was actually on them. The third is the span we found in circulation on that one day. The last is ours, and it is why we are auditing other people's numbers rather than publishing our own.

01The benchmark is eleven accounts, one agency, the first half of 2022

The figure is 30.66%, published on 6 July 2022 in a post titled Benchmarking TikTok Video Ad Hook Rates, and the sample sits in the post itself: eleven TikTok accounts that agency managed, measured from 1 January to 30 June 2022. The sentence reads "The average ad hook rate across accounts was 30.66%".

Read it top to bottom and you have an industry benchmark. Read it bottom to top and you have an average of account-level averages, from eleven accounts, over six months, four years ago, with no ad counts and no spend disclosed. Nothing was falsified at any hop. Things were only dropped.

Each hop subtracts. The denominator goes first, then the sample, then the date, and by the fourth hop a figure describing one shop's clients in early 2022 is being read as what TikTok does. The only readable copy of the original now sits in the Internet Archive. That is the whole benchmark. Eleven accounts.

Find the number's first appearance on the page

Not the headline version. The sentence in the body that states it, because that is where a denominator lives if one exists at all.

If the page never says what the figure is divided by, you can stop. It was never comparable to yours.

Step 2
Follow the citation, and keep following it

Click it. If it goes to another blog post, click again. Most trails we walked ended on the second hop, at a page with no citation of its own.

A dead link is not the end of the trail. Paste it into the Internet Archive: the page that started all of this has been gone for months and reads perfectly there.

Step 3
Ask what the sample was, and who owned it

Ads or accounts, and whose. A figure computed across 500,000 ads and a figure computed across eleven accounts one agency happened to manage are different objects with the same shape.

A stated sample size is the fastest signal that somebody did the work. A stated sample size on a different page from the number is the signal to slow down.

Check the platform's own documentation last

If the platform defines the metric but publishes no benchmark for it, every level you have read is a third-party construction. That is not a scandal. It means the only authoritative version of the number is the one you compute yourself.

03A real study's sample, attached to numbers it never measured

This is the most citable finding on this page. Several sites publish hook rate bands of roughly 25% to 35% and credit them to Motion's Creative Benchmarks 2026, quoting the sample in the same breath: 550,000 ads, over 6,000 advertisers, around $1.3 billion in spend. The report is real. The bands are not in it.

What that report actually contains

The four searches
A representation of the check rather than a transcript. We read Creative Benchmarks 2026 on 1 September 2026 and searched it for each of those four terms. What it does publish is hit rate, spend distribution and creative volume, on a sample large enough that it needs nobody's help.

Motion's hook rate ranges do exist. They sit on a separate blog page about creative performance metrics, and that page states no sample at all. The ranges have no dataset under them, the dataset has no ranges in it, and downstream the two arrive in one sentence. Motion ran a real study and did nothing wrong here. Other people are borrowing its credibility.

A real dataset's credibility gets transplanted onto numbers it never measured.

The pattern the audit kept running into

In one day of fetching we found four different fractions published under the words hold rate, and published benchmarks for it running from 15% to 60%. That spread is not a disagreement about performance. It is four pieces of arithmetic being compared as though they were one.

Published hold rate benchmarks span 15% to 60%, which is what happens when a name travels and the fraction does not. Before you compare your hold rate to anybody's, work out which of these four rows they were computing. Most pages never say.

These bars are arithmetic on made-up inputs, not measurements: 1,000,000 impressions, 800,000 reach, 250,000 three-second plays, 90,000 ThruPlays. All four ratios have been published under the name hook rate or hold rate. The ad did not change between bars.

Write your denominator into the column header and hold it there. Then never compare a figure computed one way against a figure computed another way, however close the two names sound.

A benchmark quoted without its denominator is not a number, it is a mood.

05What does Meta actually publish?

A definition, and no benchmark. Meta's own help page defines hook rate as the number of three-second views divided by the video's total impressions, times 100. That is the strongest citation available in this whole area, and it attaches no target, no average and no range to the metric it defines. Meta also labels it "in development". Taylor Sicard's 2026 roundup says the same thing from the other side: "Meta publishes no official benchmark for hook rate, hold rate, or creative hit rate".

A large study's sample quoted next to a number that study never measured. The tell is simple: the sample and the figure are cited to the same publisher but live on two different pages, and only one of the pages has data behind it.
The denominator problemMethod
Impressions and reach are different populations, so the same ad has two hook rates. Comparing a figure computed one way with a figure computed the other is the commonest error in this whole area.
Median baselineMethod
Your own middle value across ninety days at ad level, with low-impression ads dropped. Preferred to a mean because one lucky ad in a cheap placement moves a mean and cannot move a median.
The second hookCraft
A device that holds a drifting viewer near the midpoint, using a different mechanism than the opening. Any film over roughly ten seconds declares one and names the frame it lands on. No retention metric will show you it.
Floor, not targetMethod
A check exists to catch failure, not to be maximized. Optimizing a file toward a measurement is how you get something that scores green and fails in front of a person. When a check fails, fix the thing.
One of these is defined by Meta. The rest are constructions by practitioners on top of counts the platforms do publish. The platforms own the counts and nothing above them, and the counts have been redefined before, so check current documentation rather than a blog before you build a report on one.

Two more things we checked. hook_rate and hold_rate are not fields in the Ads Insights API, so hook rate is a metric you build rather than a column you request. A search of Meta's help center for hold rate returns no article at all, which makes hold rate a practitioner invention with no platform definition behind it. The official counts underneath are three-second video plays, ThruPlays, and the milestones at 25, 50, 75, 95 and 100 percent. Everything above them is arithmetic somebody chose.

06How do you compute your own baseline?

Export ninety days at ad level, pick one denominator and hold it, drop everything under five thousand impressions, take the median. Twenty minutes, and that is the whole job. Your own median beats any published figure, because it is computed on your product and your placements.

Your own baseline, in five steps

   Impressions, not reach. Reach flatters, and it flatters unevenly
   across placements, which is the worst combination.

2. EXPORT 90 DAYS AT AD LEVEL, with:
   impressions | 3-second video plays | ThruPlays | spend | placement

3. COMPUTE, per ad:
   hook rate = 3-second video plays / impressions
   hold rate = ThruPlays / 3-second video plays

4. DROP every ad under ~5,000 impressions.
   Then take the MEDIAN. Not the mean.

5. SPLIT by placement and aspect ratio before you compare anything.
   A feed number and a Reels number are different populations, and
   averaging them produces a benchmark you cannot act on.
Step 4 is the one people skip. A mean is moved by a single ad that got lucky in a cheap placement; a median is not, and the whole point of a baseline is that it should be boring.

Then treat that median as a floor, not a target. The worst self-inflicted defect in our own archive came from optimizing to a check rather than to the thing the check stood in for, and it shipped.

07A hook rate counts stops and prices none of them

An opening that arrests the wrong person scores well and costs you money twice: once for the impression, again for the click that was never going to convert. Four more things the number cannot separate are below.

A hook rate resolves at the three-second mark, which is the shaded area on the picture lane. Everything a re-hook does happens well outside it, and a hold rate averages over the whole tail rather than telling you which of these blocks lost people.

The hold rate card is why any film over roughly ten seconds has to declare a second hook and name the frame it lands on. In several films we measured, the re-hook carries more production value than the opening does, and no single-number retention metric will show you that. 08The metric we built ourselves, which ranked backwards

We are not auditing other people's numbers from a clean position. We built our own hook metric and it was wrong, in the most dangerous way available: confidently, and in the reassuring direction. A hook is change, so measure how much the picture changes in the first two seconds and gate on it. One study on one rejected film supported it. Then we ran it across all five judged films, and the two accepted ones came back as the least changeful of the set.

Measured off our own delivered files. The two films accepted by the client sit at the bottom of the range, and the three rejected ones sit at the top. The gate would have killed the survivors. It was withdrawn and must not be used.

What separated them was the last row of the same table, and it was not motion. It was information. The accepted films state their one idea before frame 12. The rejected ones said their first word at 9.92 seconds, or never. A metric that agrees with you is the one to check hardest.

In every case the wrong answer was the reassuring one.

09What we hold, what we do not, and what we could not verify

We hold measurements of files: first-sound timings across 48 films, cut rhythms, contrast under glyphs, cap heights on delivered frames. We hold a verdict log with kill reasons. What we do not hold is one ad with a reported hook rate, hold rate or return on ad spend attached to it. Not one, in the whole corpus. That makes the doctrine a prior about craft and not evidence about conversion.

What our own first-three-seconds rules are actually built onSound present before frame 3 and never faded in, from a median first sound of 0.018 seconds across 48 films. A proposition legible before frame 12. Both came from comparing accepted films against rejected ones on craft judgment, not from measuring what converted. Read them as a prior, and let your own account overrule them.

Two figures you may have seen are missing on purpose. One is a Reels hold rate average, on a page that refused every request we made. The other is a range for what counts as a good hold rate, which not one page we could fetch actually states. Naming what you could not verify is the part nobody publishes.

Two of the checks above are one idea in different clothes: a number you plan to act on needs its sample decided before you look, not quoted afterwards. The same reasoning sits behind how many creatives you can actually learn from and why twenty creatives usually produce noise.

What is hold rate for video ads?

It depends who is writing, which is the problem. We found four fractions in circulation under that one name: ThruPlays over three-second plays, fifteen-second plays over three-second plays, plays at 75% over three-second plays, and completions over three-second views. Published benchmarks span 15% to 60%. Pick one fraction, write it in the column header, and treat any published hold rate whose arithmetic is unstated as uncomparable to yours.

Is thumbstop rate the same as hook rate?

In practice the two names are used for the same ratio. Thumbstop tends to appear in Meta contexts and hook rate in TikTok ones. Meta defines hook rate and does not use the word thumbstop, so the second name is a third-party label on the same arithmetic. Neither name tells you the denominator, which is the only thing that matters for comparing two numbers.

Why do different tools report different hook rates for the same ad?

Different denominators, different attribution windows, and different treatment of placements. An ad reported at 25% against impressions is above 31% against reach with no change to the file. If two dashboards disagree, compare the formula before you compare the data.

Should I optimize creative toward a hook rate target?

Treat it as a floor rather than a target. Optimizing directly to a measurement is how you get a file that scores well and fails in front of a person. We once fixed a failing audio check by raising a drone an octave: the number went green and the client said the result hurt to listen to. Fix the thing, not the number.

Run the trail yourself on whatever benchmark is about to go into your deck. Not because vendors are dishonest, but because a number with no origin behaves exactly like a number with one, right up to the moment you spend against it. Eleven accounts, six months, 2022.
