How a short ad is built: shots, sound and type

Everybody answers how long the ad should be. Almost nobody answers how long the shot should be. Here is an 18-second reference film taken apart second by second - the cuts, where the brand lands, what the sound is doing in each window, and where the type goes.

The short answer

Most shots in a short ad should run between a fifth of a second and two and a half seconds, and the number is a consequence rather than a target. Across 48 short ads we measured frame by frame, the median mean shot length is 0.83 seconds, and product-led films cluster between 0.13 and 0.35. Our own ceiling is 2.5 seconds for a picture beat and 3.0 for a text card, because a five-word lockup needs 1.75 seconds of reading before anything else can happen.

All four are ours, counted off finished files rather than estimated: the first two off the twenty-film reference set we build against, the second two off a 48-film study of short ads. None of them is a target. They are a description of what working films happened to be.

01How long should a shot be in a 15-second ad?

Between roughly 0.2 and 2.5 seconds, and the median lands near 0.8. Across 48 short ads we measured cut by cut, the median mean shot length is 0.83 seconds; product-led films cluster tighter, at 0.13 to 0.35. The one film in that set that was rejected outright did not make its first cut until 1.08 seconds.

That last number is the one to sit with. By the time that film cut once, the fast ads beside it in the same feed had cut somewhere between five and thirty times. It was not slow because it was calm. It was slow because nobody had decided what any individual shot was for, so every shot ran until the next one was ready.

The bands are ours. The 3.0-second card ceiling is arithmetic rather than taste: our dwell floor is 0.35 seconds per word, so a five-word lockup needs 1.75 seconds on screen before the cut is even allowed to be considered.

We used to run a hard ceiling of two to three seconds on any generated shot. It came out of one bad clip and it did not survive contact with a good one. A generated shot that genuinely holds, because it has an arc or its own scene cuts inside the take, runs at whatever length the direction calls for. Duration in a generator is a pace instruction, not a length, which is a separate trap and a longer story.

Pace is the mechanism. Fast cuts hold attention and deny the eye time to find flaws.

If the opening frame holds a change a viewer can see, the first cut can wait up to about 2.5 seconds. If it does not, the cut lands before 0.25 seconds, because the cut is then the only event you have.

This one is ours rather than measured. What is measured underneath it: one film in our set holds an empty bedroom for 16 frames before a man appears in it, and the hold works because the frame is visibly waiting. Another film holds for 2.27 seconds and its frame 0 and frame 60 are almost identical. Same duration, opposite results.

The split is not produced-versus-cheap. It is whether anybody is talking. That single fact sets the cut rate, and it is the thing most briefs forget to decide.

02The canvas is a decision, and it is the cheapest one you make

Every film we ship is 1080 by 1920 at 24 frames a second, full bleed, with zero letterboxed or pillarboxed frames anywhere in it. At 24fps one frame is 41.7 milliseconds and fifteen frames is exactly 96 beats per minute, which is the cleanest integer grid available to you. Put the cuts on whole frames against that grid and the sound lands for free.

The two contrast numbers come from the W3C's contrast criterion: AA for normal text at delivery size, AA-large at embed size, because most of the loss at 360 pixels is a resampling artifact rather than a design fault.

None of that is styling. It is the set of things that must be true before anyone can have an opinion about the film. Sound at frame zero is the most corroborated finding we hold: across 133 films in three separate studies, we found no exception. The film we once scored 5 out of 100 took 0.178 seconds to reach first sound and was still ramping at 0.9 seconds. It spent the entire scroll decision in silence.

03How many cuts fit into 15 seconds?

About twelve to fifteen. Our own reference set runs 14 to 18 cuts across 17 to 18 seconds, so a 15-second film in the same idiom lands around twelve to fifteen. Use it as a sanity check and not as a brief, because we published that range as a target once and then withdrew it: twenty films built toward a cut count came back as one film made twenty times.

Later we retired eight finished ads in a single afternoon over the same disease, and the lint that measured editing mechanics went in the bin that day. What replaced it measures perception: no two pieces in a set may match on more than two of the six axes a viewer actually reads. What makes an ad resist fatigue is the long version.

Four things about ad length that we tried and stopped believing

What survived the retirement is not a count. It is four pacing habits: a shot ceiling, a motif that runs no more than three shots before the film has to change its mind, a beat of color every few seconds, and no two adjacent shots sharing a scale class. That last one does most of the work. Macro, then macro, then macro reads as one long shot no matter how many times you cut it.

Ember blocks are the four moments the film is actually built around: the opening event, the brand reveal at 22% of runtime, the re-hook at the midpoint, and the payoff. Everything else exists to get from one to the next. Open the list under the strip if you would rather read it than look at it.

The interlock almost nobody buildsLook at the sound row between 5.0 and 8.6 seconds. Reading and listening compete for the same attention, so the mix gets out of the way while the viewer is reading and comes back when they are looking again. One film we measured drops its sub content by two thirds and lifts its mid exactly under a type build, then slams back on the payoff shot. It is free to implement. Almost nobody does it.

The second thing to notice is at 8.6 seconds. Any film over about ten seconds needs a second hook, and it needs to be declared in advance with the frame it lands on. In several films we measured, the re-hook carries more production value than the opening. It has to work by a different mechanism than the first hook, or it reads as the film repeating itself.

05Where does the brand go?

Between 20 and 30 percent of runtime, which on an 18-second film is 3.6 to 5.4 seconds in, after the hook has resolved and never inside it. The end card is a repeat, not an introduction. That window is ours, and it is a synthesis of two measurements rather than a measurement itself, which is worth saying plainly.

The first two bars are measured: 68 competitor transcripts with word-level timestamps, and one reference luxury film. The last two are our default window, which we synthesized from them. We mark it that way in our own documents and we will mark it that way here.

Those two bars look like a contradiction and they are the same rule at two different runtimes. The 1.3 seconds is one film: a single luxury reference we timed, in which a wordmark everybody already knows lands early and reads as a recognition event, because your eye hits it and something happens. An unknown brand's wordmark in the same position is a piece of text nobody can read yet, which is homework rather than a stimulus.

One real exception. A quiet single-claim film, the kind that makes one argument and stops, is often correct to hold the brand to the payoff and put nothing before it. What is never correct is arriving at either answer by accident. The direction lock names the beat the brand appears on, in writing, before anything renders.

06The build order, and the three places changing your mind is free

This order exists because of a week that scored 2 out of 100, when every correction was landing on a finished render instead of on paper. Why we get paper approved before pixels tells that story properly.

One document per brand: every usable asset, annotated by what it could do in a film. Hook material, body material, payoff material. Plus what we can make that does not exist yet.

This is the step that stops a shot list being derived from an inventory. A shot list derived from an inventory is not a story, it is an assortment with a running order.

How much of the subject the frame holds: macro, close, medium, wide. No two adjacent shots may share one. Three macros in a row read as one long shot no matter how many times you cut between them.
Motif capPicture
A repeating visual idea, a texture, a color, a camera move, runs no more than three shots before the film changes its mind. Past three it stops being a motif and becomes the film's only idea.
Brand-reveal windowStructure
The span of runtime in which the brand mark first appears: our default is 20 to 30 percent, after the hook resolves, held at least a second at full opacity. Named in the direction lock, never accidental.
The re-hookStructure
A second hook, on a different mechanism than the first, declared with the frame it lands on. Required on any film over roughly ten seconds. In several films we measured it carries more production value than the opening.
Dwell floorType
The minimum time a line stays fully opaque, computed from its own word count: at least 1.2 seconds, or 0.35 seconds per word, whichever is greater. Fades do not count, because type at partial alpha is not readable.
Full bleedDelivery
Zero letterboxed or pillarboxed frames. Every frame fills 1080 by 1920 edge to edge, and the delivered file is re-measured for flat edge bands rather than trusted.
These are house terms. Where one is a synthesis rather than a measurement, the definition says so.

How long should a scene be in a video ad?

Between about 0.2 and 2.5 seconds for a picture beat, with 0.4 to 0.8 doing most of the work. Our ceiling rises to 3.0 seconds only for a card carrying text, because reading is slower than looking. Anything longer needs an internal arc: something that starts and finishes inside the frame. Length without an arc reads as a held slideshow, whatever the footage cost.

How many cuts should a 15 second ad have?

Our reference set runs 14 to 18 cuts across 17 to 18 seconds, so a 15-second film in the same idiom lands around 12 to 15. Treat that as a sanity check rather than a brief. We briefed a cut count once and got twenty films that were recognizably one film, which is why we withdrew it as a target and kept it as a description.

What is the best video ad length for Meta or TikTok?

Platform caps move, so read the current spec page before you rely on any number, this one included. The more useful answer is that length should fall out of the beats rather than being chosen first.

Our own films land between 13.3 and 18.4 seconds, and none of those numbers was picked in advance. Motion's benchmark work across more than 550,000 ads also reports that around half of creatives are switched off before day 28, which suggests the lever worth pulling is how many genuinely different swings you take, not how many seconds each one runs.

Where should the logo appear in a short ad?

Our default is a first appearance between 20 and 30 percent of runtime, after the hook has landed, held at least one full second at full opacity, then repeated on the end card. Frame zero is the wrong place for an unfamiliar brand: a wordmark nobody recognizes is not something the eye reacts to, it is a piece of text nobody can read yet.

Does an ad need sound if most people watch muted?

Yes, and the reason is not the people who hear it. Sound is a retention and rejection channel rather than an acquisition one: the picture does the stopping, and the sound decides whether the stop holds. Across 133 films in three studies we found sound present at frame zero without exception. What we would not do is build the organizing idea in the audio, because most of the audience never receives it.

How do I check pacing without editing software?

Watch it on a phone at arm's length with the sound on, and write down two things: the second at which you could say what the film is about, and the second at which you knew how it ended. If the first is later than one second, the hook is not doing its job. If the second is earlier than two thirds of the way through, the payoff has leaked.

All of this makes a film that is allowed to be judged, and nothing more than that. The number that keeps me honest is 43 percent: fewer than half of our films that clear every automated check survive the first human watching them. The checks are the floor. Nobody has ever bought the floor.
