Sound is 40% of the ad and you are treating it as 5%

Picture and sound multiply rather than add, so a perfect picture against a bland bed is a half-finished film. The 40% is a working split of ours and we cannot prove it. What the first sound has to do, where a drop lands, and when the bed gets committed.

The short answer

We treat a short ad as roughly 60% picture and 40% sound, and we treat those two as multiplying rather than adding. A film with a perfect picture and a bland bed is a 60 percent film at best. Ninety and ninety is ninety. That is the whole argument for spending real attention on a bed most viewers will hear for two seconds. The split is ours, and it is a working prior rather than a measurement.

The 60/40 weighting is ours and it is a prior, not a published measurement. What the calculator is actually demonstrating is the multiplication, which holds whatever the exact weighting turns out to be: the sound cannot add to a picture, it can only scale it.

01Why does sound matter so much in a short ad?

Because it is the only channel that can make somebody physically want the video to stop. Picture can bore you. Sound can hurt. We shipped a film with a bed that had been tuned to pass a midrange check, and the client's note arrived before any note about the picture: a high pitched sound that bothers me in my ears. Other people had told him the same. It is logged as the worst item on that film's defect list.

It is the worst item because we did it to ourselves. A lint had failed at 4% midrange, so the drone went up an octave and partials went on until the number read 29%. The number moved. The film got worse.

A lint is a floor, not a target. When a check fails, fix the thing, not the number.

Counted off finished audio, not estimated. The first is the most corroborated finding we hold: 133 films across three separate studies, no exceptions. The last is a ratio rather than a level, which matters more than it sounds.

02Audio rejects before it attracts

The picture does the stopping. The sound decides whether the stop holds. That ordering is not a preference, it follows from the fact that a large share of feed impressions begin muted, so the audio has not been heard yet at the moment the thumb decides. A great bed will not rescue a dead opening frame. A bad bed will lose a viewer the picture already caught.

Which reframes the budget question. A soundtrack buys permission to keep the attention the picture already won. That is worth less than people who love music think, and far more than people who ship stock beds behave as though it is.

Four things we have been told about music in ads

None of these are strawmen. The third one we believed ourselves, wrote into a build, and had to remove from twenty films.

03The first sound is an event, not a texture

Something has to start at frame zero. Not exist at frame zero, start. We measured 48 short ads: the median time to first sound is 0.018 seconds, forty of them are under 0.12, and not one of them fades in. A bed that swells is a bed that arrives after the decision has been made.

The same distinction runs through the whole mix, and treble is where it shows. Four films full of pouring water put no high-frequency content on any of the pours. One dragged a metal blade across a frozen tube for four and a half seconds with nothing in the mix acknowledging the tool. The two films that got it right did it with one sound each.

04Where should a drop actually land?

Inside the beat it belongs to, and never on that beat's first frame. A drop on the first frame of a cut reads as the cut, so the ear files it as a transition noise and the moment is spent on nothing. A drop a few frames later reads as something that happened because of what you are now looking at, which is the whole point of putting it there.

The sound row carries both candidate placements against one picture beat, so you can see the difference. Only one of them is the film. The re-hook runs from 7.2 seconds; the drop on 7.2 is heard as the cut, and the drop at 8.1 is heard as an event inside a shot you are already looking at.
The interlock almost nobody buildsReading and listening compete for the same attention. So the mix yields while the viewer is reading and reclaims when they are looking. One film we measured drops its sub content by two thirds and lifts its mid exactly under a type build, then slams back on the payoff shot. It is free to implement and we have never seen anybody else do it. It also means the largest sound in a film often lands on a word appearing, not on a picture cut.

05Is silence a legitimate choice?

Yes, and it is a register rather than an absence. Five films in our corpus put their biggest transitions inside measured near-silent gaps rather than on a hit. One engineers a five-frame void and starts the picture moving four frames before the sound comes back. The breath before the sentence does the work that a crash cymbal is usually asked to do, and it costs nothing.

In a talking film the gaps arrive for free, which is why sixty-plus of sixty-four creator files we studied carry no music bed at all. In a wordless film you have no speech gaps, so you have to build them. That is the whole instruction: if there is no voice, the silences are a thing you author.

A wordless film has one body and it is the low end. Our own corpus splits cleanly rather than sitting on a spectrum: wordless films run a median of 59.5% of their energy below 120Hz, and films with speech run 15.7%. There is almost nothing in between, which means you pick a pole before you cut a frame.

The thing to gate is the ratio of sub to treble, not the treble on its own. One film we accepted carries more treble than 46 of the other 47, and it is fine, because there is a fifth of the mix sitting underneath holding it up.

The reliable separator between these is the audio, not the picture. Speech with gaps is a creator talking head, scripted voiceover with no gaps is a brand film, music with no speech is a pose reel. You can hear which one you have made with your eyes shut.

06Can one music bed make a campaign feel consistent?

It makes a campaign feel like one asset. We put a single bed under three good ads and the set came back reading as one thing shown three times, which is the same disease that killed eight of our finished films in a single afternoon for sharing an argument, a subject, a world, an energy, a point of view and a borrowed genre.

Tempo is the same trap one level down. Twenty ads on a single 90 BPM grid were audible as sameness regardless of instrument. Across our reference sets tempo runs 65 to 144 BPM in one study and 51 to 208 in another. Per film, measured off the rendered audio, never asserted in a brief.

What actually carries a brand in audioNot the track. A recurring sonic gesture, a consistent relationship between voice and bed, a house rule about how endings behave. Those survive across films that sound nothing alike. A shared bed is the cheapest answer to audio branding and it buys sameness. Motion's benchmark work across more than 550,000 ads reports that around half of all creatives are switched off before day 28, and ads that resist fatigue are not the ones that sound identical.

07Commit the sound before the first cut

This is the ordering rule and it is the one that actually changes output. The bed is chosen and committed as a file at direction lock, before a single frame is cut. Not a genre label, not a reference track, an artifact. Then the cut is derived from it and it from the cut table, so changing a shot length cannot drift the sound off picture.

The gate is at step 02. A bed picked after step 04 is being fitted to a finished film, which is the order that produced a week of work we scored at 2 out of 100.

Two craft details make that order cheap to hold. Put the cuts on a whole-frame grid and the sound lands for free: 15 frames at 24 frames a second is exactly 96 beats per minute, the cleanest integer grid available. And measure your measurements. Our own tempo detector once read a 90 BPM build as 165 because it was computing onsets across the full spectrum, where the bed's own low end drowns every transient.

Does sound design really matter if most people watch on mute?

Yes, and the reason is not the people who hear it. Muted viewing sets the floor: the ad has to work with the sound off. Sound then decides whether the viewers who did unmute stay. It is a retention and rejection channel rather than an acquisition one, which is a smaller job than music people claim and a bigger one than stock beds assume.

Can sound design create brand consistency across a campaign?

Not by reusing a track. We put one bed under three good ads and the set read as one campaign asset rather than three ads. What does carry across films is a recurring gesture, a consistent voice-to-bed relationship, and a house rule about how endings behave. Those survive between films that sound nothing alike, and they do not manufacture sameness.

What music should I use for a video ad?

Pick the pole first: bass-led or voice-led, never neither. Then pick a track that has an event in it rather than a mood, because a bed with no event is wallpaper. Generate or audition four candidates, put each against the actual cut for thirty seconds, and choose with the picture running. A track chosen on its own always sounds better than it plays.

Where should the beat drop in a short ad?

Inside a beat, not on its first frame. A drop on the frame of the cut is heard as the cut and the moment is wasted. A few frames later it reads as something happening in the shot you are already looking at. Also consider dropping to silence instead: five films in our corpus put their biggest transitions inside measured near-silent gaps.

How loud should an ad end?

Loud relative to itself. Our floor is the final two seconds sitting at 0.6 of the film's own peak two-second level or above, because quiet endings under a card die in a feed. We gate the shape rather than the absolute level, since level is normalized somewhere downstream and shape is not.

Should I fix a bad bed in mastering?

Usually not. Two generated beds from one session measured 9% and 4% midrange energy and no mastering pass rescued either. The lesson we wrote down is to fix the prompt or the track, not the EQ, and to treat every check as a floor rather than a target. We once optimized a bed to a linter and shipped something that physically hurt to listen to.

The honest version of the 40% claim is that we cannot prove the number. Nobody has run the experiment and our films carry no outcome data, so the split stays a working number we argue for rather than a finding. What we can prove is the shape of the mistake: every film we have killed for its sound was killed on the sound alone, while the picture stayed exactly as good as it was. That is what multiplying looks like from the inside. The same file, halved, by the one element nobody put in the budget. The rest of it is in how a short ad is built.
